Well this is certainly a movie I didn’t expect to like let alone praise but yet here we are. “Dumplin'” tells the story of Willowdean Dickson (nicknamed Dumplin’ by her mother) a young texan girl who, like many her age, has body confidence issues but is mentored on how to be confident in herself by her aunt with whom she has a very close bond.

After her aunt passes away, Willowdean’s self image demons are more prolific than ever and only made worse by the fact her mother Rosie (Jennifer Aniston) is a small time celebrity having been a former beauty queen. Their relationship is distant and makes Willowdean feel like she’s not accepted by her mother because of her looks.

After being spurred on by her late aunt via an application form she finds of her aunt’s to compete in a beauty pageant from years ago Willowdean decides to take a stand and enter the upcoming beauty contest aided by her two friends.

“Dumplin'” explores acceptance of individuals and what that means and entails for the individual and wraps it in a tight, well written and heart warming coming of age story. It oozes with diversity in all the right places without it ever feeling forced and every character has clear motivations and arcs which enables you, as a viewer, to really root for our heroes of the story.

The film uses Dolly Parton tracks cleverly elevated from background music to a device to weave and thread the plot together consistently. It certainly won’t be remembered as a classic of sorts, and the plot is pretty straight forward as it goes, but it does deliver on exactly what it aims to – and then some.

I never expected to enjoy this one, and I’m hardly the target audience, but if you have a couple of hours free take the gamble and watch it. It may just pay off.
